Recreate the likely seating situation
Sit in a chair with a backrest reasonably similar to the one expected during the journey. Try the pillow with the clothes you intend to wear. Check whether it pushes your head forward or permits a natural position. The backrest and any existing headrest contribute to the result, so the same pillow will not feel identical in every seat.
Turn your head and change position slightly. An accessory that is comfortable only when you remain completely motionless may become irritating during a longer journey. Do not fasten closures too tightly, and follow the use instructions. If you have an existing condition, a travel pillow should not be treated as treatment or a substitute for individual professional advice.
Separate filling from packed size
Foam, loose soft fillings and inflatable designs behave differently. An inflatable pillow packs small and allows some adjustment of firmness, but has a valve and requires preparation. A filled model is immediately usable but takes up room even when not needed. Decide whether that space will remain available throughout the rest of the trip.
A pillow attached outside a bag is accessible but can easily touch seats, floors and other objects. A suitable cover protects its surface in transit. Check the attachment loops and whether it knocks against you or other people while walking. A workable arrangement needs to function between the transport and accommodation as well as while you are seated.
Check cleaning before purchase
Find out whether the cover can be removed and what cleaning method is permitted. Some materials take a long time to dry. If you intend to use the pillow on successive stages, its care needs to fit that schedule. Avoid pressing a still-damp cover into a tight transport pouch. A removable cover only helps if you can manage its washing and drying in practice.
Be willing to leave it behind after a trial
Use the pillow during a longer quiet sitting period before departure. Notice whether you keep using it or put it aside after a few minutes. An accessory that bothers you more than it helps does not have to come along. Sometimes changing position or using an existing adjustable headrest is more suitable.
For a short ride with frequent changes, the additional item may create more work than benefit. On a longer uninterrupted stage, the balance may be different. Make the decision for the particular journey rather than assuming that every item on a generic list of travel accessories is necessary for every traveller.
