Move from lanes into open river space
Begin with a manageable area around the cathedral and town hall. The change between narrow streets and larger squares makes it possible to compare façades and views. Choose any substantial interior visit deliberately. Entering every interesting building may leave too little time for the opposite bank once you finally reach the Danube.
The Stone Bridge changes the scale: a confined street suddenly becomes a broad view over water and town. Take time on the crossing without blocking movement. A settled position at the edge is better for photographs than stopping unexpectedly in the middle of other pedestrians. Wind may feel stronger here than among the old-town houses.
Stadtamhof lies on the other side. Do not treat it simply as the point where you turn around. A short street loop or a pause there makes the transition between the districts more meaningful. There is no need to continue immediately towards hills farther beyond the centre.
Choose riverside paths by length and return
Decide whether to stay beside the water after crossing or head back into the old town. Several visible banks and island areas do not mean that every point connects directly. Check usable crossings before beginning what appears to be a short circuit. During high water or closures, follow the signed route.
A longer Danube walk fits a second half-day more comfortably than the final minutes before a museum booking. Select an endpoint with access to food, accommodation or transport. This avoids enjoying a leisurely outward stroll only to discover that the same distance must be covered quickly on the return.
For a visit with limited walking, the bridge itself can be the principal outdoor activity. Combine a seated break on one side with a single indoor visit on the other. A smaller radius is not a disadvantage if it makes the experience less hurried.
When choosing accommodation, examine its exact old-town position. The approach from the station, cobbled sections and possible luggage storage affect arrival and departure days. Collect your suitcase after the final quiet riverside interval, provided returning to storage does not require a major detour. The Danube can then remain part of the experience rather than merely a route between appointments.
