Use the Old Market for orientation
The Old Market places the town hall and St Nicholas' Church in a close architectural relationship. Notice the square as a whole first: different façades, scales and viewpoints reveal more than one photograph of the town hall. The hall remains an administrative building, so its striking exterior does not automatically imply an unrestricted indoor circuit.
Choose a compact old-town route from here. Fix only one lengthy indoor visit so that the streets between attractions retain some time. Someone interested in churches or urban history will want different pauses from a companion mainly seeking the water. A shared start at the market followed by separate sections can accommodate both.
Distinguish the harbour from the beach
The harbour explains Stralsund's connection with water, but is not the same as a beach promenade. When choosing accommodation, check its relation to your preferred harbour area, the railway station or an actual beach section. The description 'near the coast' says little by itself.
A harbour walk can complement the old-town day. For a longer route along the Sundpromenade, reserve a separate period. Wind, temperature and the return journey should determine its length. Find a suitable resting place and keep working and traffic areas clear, even when a particularly interesting vessel is nearby.
Choose excursions from the base
A trip to Rügen or Hiddensee is a separate daily plan. Ask the relevant operator about actual services, departure points and returns. Seasonal connections and different transport modes cannot be inferred from a general map. An unavailable or fully booked boat cannot be compensated for by walking faster through the old town.
On a short stay, dropping an excursion and exploring Stralsund more fully may be preferable. A weather-dependent outdoor section and a relevant indoor visit already provide variety. With several nights, put an excursion on a day without another fixed booking back in town.
For each excursion option, note the latest sensible return rather than only the first departure. Include the journey from the landing or stop to your accommodation. This complete view makes Stralsund a usable base instead of somewhere you merely pass through with bags every morning and evening.
