From the Arena towards the squares
Piazza Bra, with the Arena, is a useful beginning when approaching the old town from the south. Decide between viewing the building from outside and visiting its interior. If a performance is the reason for your trip, organise the evening around the actual event schedule. Daytime sightseeing and an evening performance have different arrangements; check their access and admission conditions separately.
Via Mazzini provides a direction towards Piazza delle Erbe. Use the shopping street as a connection without committing to every break along it. At the next square, look around before choosing somewhere to sit. If photography matters, avoid combining a precisely timed restaurant reservation with a walking route that leaves no space to stop.
Nearby Piazza dei Signori extends this part of the walk without introducing an entirely new district. Choose a longer pause or a relevant visit before continuing. With limited time, looking closely at one of these places is more satisfying than treating the squares as names to cross off. Keep any booked admission as the day's anchor and allow the surrounding walk to adjust to it.
At the river, choose how far to continue
Ponte Pietra provides another focus on the Adige. Check the route from your last square to the bridge before setting off and leave room for small detours. The waterfront changes the character of the walk; that interval does not immediately need to be filled with another ticketed visit. A short time by the river can be a complete ending to the route.
Crossing to the other bank and continuing to a higher viewpoint is an extension rather than an obligation. Consider the climb, remaining daylight and eventual journey back. If you are already tired, another view does not automatically improve the day. On a second day, you could instead explore a different section of the old town and approach the river from another direction.
Include arrival in the calculation
Verona Porta Nuova station and the old town are not the same arrival point. Allow for the journey from the station to your accommodation or first square while carrying luggage. For a day visit, confirm an available storage option if you need one. A wheeled case changes both your pace and your willingness to make small diversions.
Give the return journey a clear starting point. A final coffee nearer the station is easier to adjust than another substantial interior visit. With one overnight stay, split the proposed route between arrival and departure days. Both remain useful, and you avoid crossing the entire centre twice simply because every stop was placed into one continuous afternoon.
